Atmakaraka: your soul planet, explained
Your atmakaraka (“soul indicator”) is the planet that has traveled furthest through its sign in your sidereal chart, the one with the highest degree, ignoring which sign it is in. In Jaimini astrology it stands for the soul’s main lesson. The planet with the lowest degree is the darakaraka, linked with your partner.
How to find your atmakaraka
- Take your Vedic (sidereal) chart. A Western chart won’t work: the degrees are different.
- List the seven classical planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn.
- For each, note only its degree within its sign (0° to 30°). The sign itself doesn’t matter.
- The highest is your atmakaraka. The lowest is your darakaraka.
Here is a real example: the sky at noon UTC on October 5, 2026, from our chart engine. Jupiter is furthest along its sign at 26°08′, so anyone born then has Jupiter as atmakaraka; Mars, at 10°03′, is the darakaraka.
The sidereal sign calculator works out your atmakaraka and darakaraka from your birth data.
Where the idea comes from
The atmakaraka comes from the Jaimini Sutras, a classical text that sits beside the better-known Parashara tradition. Jaimini ranks the planets by degree into seven (or eight) chara karakas, “movable significators.” They are movable because they change from chart to chart: Venus might be one person’s atmakaraka and another’s darakaraka.
The ranking, highest degree first:
| Rank | Karaka | Stands for | In the example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Atmakaraka | the soul, what you are here to learn | Jupiter (26°08′) |
| 2 | Amatyakaraka | career, counsel, the right hand | Sun (18°02′) |
| 3 | Bhratrikaraka | siblings, courage, close allies | Saturn (16°59′) |
| 4 | Matrikaraka | mother, home, nurture | Venus (14°09′) |
| 5 | Putrakaraka | children, creativity, students | Moon (13°23′) |
| 6 | Gnatikaraka | rivals, obstacles, illness, debts | Mercury (12°10′) |
| 7 | Darakaraka | partner, spouse, close relationships | Mars (10°03′) |
Seven or eight? Some astrologers add Rahu as an eighth karaka, counting its degree backward (30° minus its degree) because the nodes move backward. That adds a Pitrikaraka (father) to the list. Twenty-Seven uses the seven-planet scheme, which Parashara also describes and many teachers prefer.
What each planet means as atmakaraka
These are the traditional readings, put plainly. Read them as a theme to notice, not a sentence passed on you.
- Sun
- Lessons about ego and authority: learning to lead without needing to be seen leading.
- Moon
- Lessons about feeling and care: caring for others without losing yourself, and letting moods pass.
- Mars
- Lessons about anger and courage: using force cleanly, choosing fights worth having.
- Mercury
- Lessons about words and cleverness: honesty in speech, learning to listen.
- Jupiter
- Lessons about wisdom and belief: teaching what you know, respecting teachers, avoiding self-righteousness.
- Venus
- Lessons about love and pleasure: relationships, beauty, and desire held lightly.
- Saturn
- Lessons about duty and time: patience, hard work, accepting limits, and carrying weight for others.
Karakamsha: the next step
The navamsa (D9) sign that your atmakaraka occupies is called the karakamsha. Jaimini astrologers read it as the soul’s preferred setting, and the planets with it or aspecting it fill in the picture. It needs an exact birth time.
The darakaraka: your partner planet
The planet with the lowest degree is the darakaraka, the significator of the spouse or long-term partner. It is read as the qualities you meet in a partner, or learn through partnership: Venus for warmth and beauty, Saturn for steadiness and age, Mars for heat and drive, and so on. It is a lens on relationships, not a description of a specific person.
A note on birth time
Most planets move slowly enough that the time of day barely matters. The Moon doesn’t: it covers about 13° a day. If your Moon is at a high or low degree, a birth time that is off by a few hours can change both your atmakaraka and your darakaraka. Ties are rare; when two planets share the same degree, astrologers compare minutes and seconds.
Questions people ask
What is an atmakaraka?
The atmakaraka is the planet at the highest degree within its sign in your sidereal chart, counting the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. In Jaimini astrology it is the soul’s significator.
How do I calculate my atmakaraka?
Take your Vedic (sidereal) chart, look at each planet’s degree within its sign, and pick the highest. Ignore the sign itself. A Western chart gives different degrees and the wrong answer.
What is the darakaraka?
The planet with the lowest degree within its sign. It is read as the significator of your spouse or long-term partner.
Can Rahu be the atmakaraka?
Only in the eight-karaka scheme, where Rahu’s degree is counted backward from 30°. In the seven-karaka scheme, which Twenty-Seven uses, it cannot.
Ask about your soul planet
Twenty-Seven reads your whole chart, not just one point, and talks it through with you. It is an AI, and it remembers what you share so the next talk goes deeper.
Twenty-Seven is an AI astrologer, not a person. It makes no predictions: in its view the planets are clocks, not controllers.
