Nakshatras
Moon nakshatra meaning: your birth star
Your Moon nakshatra, also called your janma nakshatra or birth star, is the one of 27 lunar mansions the Moon was in when you were born. Each mansion is a 13°20′ slice of the sidereal zodiac with its own star, deity, symbol and ruling planet. Vedic astrology reads it as the texture of your mind and feelings, and it sets the order of your life’s planetary periods (dashas).
What a nakshatra is
The Moon takes about 27.3 days to go once around the zodiac. Ancient Indian astronomers split its path into 27 equal parts, one for each night of the trip, and named each after a star group the Moon passes. These are the nakshatras, or lunar mansions: places where the Moon “stays” for about a day.
27 × 13°20′ = 360°. The 12 signs and the 27 mansions are two rulers laid on the same circle: each sign holds two and a quarter nakshatras.
Why the Moon, and not the Sun?
In Vedic astrology the Sun is the self you show and the Moon is the mind: what you feel, how you react, what you need to feel safe. The Moon also moves fast, about 13° a day, so its position is personal. Everyone born in the same month shares a Sun sign, but the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so two people born a few days apart usually have different birth stars.
That is why Indian families have long asked for a child’s birth star before anything else, and why names, rituals and matchmaking are often keyed to it.
What your Moon nakshatra tells you
- Its deity and myth. Each mansion has a ruling god or force: Agni, fire, for Krittika; the storm god Rudra for Ardra; the friendship god Mitra for Anuradha. The myth is the oldest layer of meaning.
- Its shakti. An old Vedic text, the Taittiriya Brahmana, gives each mansion a shakti, a power: the power to burn, to grow, to hold, to uproot.
- Its symbol. A razor, an ox cart, a teardrop, a lotus: a picture to think with.
- Its ruling planet. The nine grahas rule three mansions each, in a fixed order. This ruler matters for the dashas.
- Its pada. Each mansion has four quarters of 3°20′, called padas. Each pada falls in a different navamsa sign, which colors the mansion’s theme.
Your birth star sets your dashas
The Vimshottari dasha system divides a 120-year life cycle into nine planetary periods, from Ketu (7 years) to Venus (20 years). Which one you are born into is decided by your Moon nakshatra’s ruler, and how much of it is left depends on how far the Moon had traveled through the mansion. A Moon at the very start of Rohini gives nearly the full 10 years of a Moon period; a Moon near its end, only a few months.
That is why the exact birth time matters: the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, which can shift the periods by months.
How it is used day to day
Traditional astrologers count from your birth star to the Moon’s nakshatra on any given day. The count, in a cycle of nine called the taras, gives a simple daily rhythm: days of your own star, of well-being, of friction, of friendship. Twenty-Seven uses this as a clock for the day, never as a forecast.

What if I don’t know my birth time?
You can often still know your birth star. The Moon spends about a day in each mansion, so on most birth dates it was in one nakshatra for most of the day and crossed into the next at some hour. Our nakshatra calculator shows both possibilities and the exact local time the Moon crossed the line.
Questions people ask
What is my Moon nakshatra?
It is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born, one of 27 slices of 13°20′ in the sidereal zodiac. You need your birth date, place and ideally time to find it.
Is janma nakshatra the same as Moon nakshatra?
Yes. Janma nakshatra (birth star) means the nakshatra of the Moon at birth.
Which is more important, Moon sign or nakshatra?
Both come from the same Moon. The sign is the broad setting; the nakshatra is the specific place within it, with its own deity, symbol and ruler. Many Vedic astrologers read the nakshatra first.
Can I find my nakshatra without a birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon is usually in one or two nakshatras on a given day. The calculator shows both and when the Moon crossed between them.
