Vedic basics
Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?
Because Vedic astrology measures the signs against the stars, and Western astrology measures them against the seasons. The two starting points have drifted about 24°13′ apart (in 2026). So if your Sun was in the first 24 degrees or so of your Western sign, your Vedic Sun is in the sign before it. That is true for about four people in five.
Two zodiacs, one sky
Both systems split the Sun’s yearly path into 12 equal signs of 30°. They only disagree about where to start counting.
- Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. 0° Aries is the point where the Sun crosses the equator in March, the spring equinox. The signs are tied to the seasons.
- Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac. 0° Aries is tied to the fixed stars. The signs are tied to the constellations behind the planets.
About 1,700 years ago the two starting points were in the same place. Since then the Earth’s axis has slowly wobbled, like a spinning top, and the equinox has slid backward against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. This drift is called precession. The gap between the two zodiacs is called the ayanamsa, and on October 5, 2026 it is 24°13′ (Lahiri, the standard in India).
Find your Vedic Sun sign by date
The Sun moves about 1° a day, so a 24.2° gap moves every sign’s dates by about 24 days. These are the dates the Sun enters each sign in 2026, worked out by our chart engine (the exact day can move by one from year to year).
| Sign | Western (tropical) Sun enters | Vedic (sidereal) Sun enters |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 20 | Apr 14 |
| Taurus | Apr 20 | May 15 |
| Gemini | May 21 | Jun 15 |
| Cancer | Jun 21 | Jul 17 |
| Leo | Jul 23 | Aug 17 |
| Virgo | Aug 23 | Sep 17 |
| Libra | Sep 23 | Oct 17 |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 | Nov 16 |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 | Dec 16 |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 | Jan 14 |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 | Feb 13 |
| Pisces | Feb 18 | Mar 15 |
So someone born on April 1 is an Aries in Western astrology and a Pisces in Vedic astrology. Someone born on April 18 is Aries in both.
The rule of thumb
Look at the degree of your Western Sun (any birth chart site shows it).
- 0° to about 24°: your Vedic Sun is one sign earlier. A 10° Gemini Sun is a Taurus Sun in Vedic astrology.
- About 24° to 30°: your Vedic Sun is the same sign. A 27° Gemini Sun is still Gemini.
The same shift applies to every planet and to your rising sign, not just the Sun. Your Moon, Venus and ascendant can all move back a sign. The sidereal sign calculator shows all of them side by side.
In Vedic astrology, “your sign” usually means your Moon
There is a second reason Vedic signs feel different. In the West, “What’s your sign?” means your Sun sign. In India, it usually means your Moon sign (rashi), and the most personal detail of all is the Moon’s nakshatra, the lunar mansion it sat in when you were born. The Sun matters, but the Moon is read as the mind and the inner life.
So if you meet Vedic astrology for the first time and hear “you’re a Scorpio,” it may be your Moon, not your Sun. The nakshatra calculator gives you both your Moon sign and your nakshatra.
Does this mean my Western sign was wrong?
No. The two systems answer different questions. The tropical zodiac describes where the Sun is in the cycle of the seasons. The sidereal zodiac describes which stars it stands in front of. Each is consistent on its own terms. You can read sidereal vs tropical for the longer comparison.
What doesn’t work is mixing them: taking a Western chart and reading it with Vedic rules, or the other way around. Twenty-Seven is a Vedic astrologer, so it uses the sidereal zodiac all the way through.
What about Ophiuchus and the “13th sign”?
Every few years a story says the signs have changed because of a 13th constellation, Ophiuchus. That mixes up two things. The constellations are star pictures of different sizes, and the Sun does pass through Ophiuchus. But both zodiacs, tropical and sidereal, use 12 equal signs of 30°. Vedic astrology is not “astrology by constellation.” It is the same 12 equal signs, just started from the stars.
Questions people ask
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars; Western uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Because of precession they are now about 24.2° apart, so most planets fall one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.
How do I know my Vedic sign?
If your Western Sun is in the first 24° or so of its sign, your Vedic Sun is the sign before. For an exact answer, and for your Moon sign and nakshatra, use a sidereal calculator like ours.
Is my Vedic sign my real sign?
Both are real measurements of the same sky. They use different starting points. Read a Vedic chart with Vedic rules and a Western chart with Western rules.
Does my rising sign change in Vedic astrology too?
Usually, yes. The ascendant moves back by the same amount as the planets, so it often lands one sign earlier. You need your birth time to know it.

Twenty-Seven works out your Vedic chart from your birth date, time and place, starting with your Moon’s mansion. Then you can ask it why it reads you the way it does.
Twenty-Seven is an AI astrologer, not a person. It makes no predictions: in its view the planets are clocks, not controllers.
