The stars of Mula

Mula’s stars are the stinger of the Scorpion: Shaula and Lesath, the pair at the tip of the curled tail, low in the south on summer evenings in North America. In the sidereal zodiac Shaula sits at about 0°44′ Sagittarius, right at the start of the mansion.

Look just past those stars and you are looking toward the center of our galaxy, which lies at about 3° sidereal Sagittarius, inside Mula. The old name fits: mula means “root,” and this is the direction of the Milky Way’s own root.

The deity and the story

Mula’s deity is Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution, decay and the far-off places where things come apart. Vedic hymns ask her to stay away. Later readers see her more kindly: she undoes what is false so the root can be seen.

The symbol is a bundle of roots tied together. It shows what is under the ground: the part of a thing that feeds it and that you only see when you pull it up. Another old symbol for Mula is the elephant goad, the hook that steers something much bigger than the hand holding it.

What Mula is about

Mula is the mansion of going to the bottom of things. Its shakti is barhana, the power to break down or uproot. Read as a clock, it marks seasons of questioning foundations: clearing out, starting from the ground, asking what is really true.

When the Moon sat here at birth, the old texts describe a mind that will not settle for the surface. That can show up as research, faith, philosophy or blunt honesty, and sometimes as a habit of pulling things up to check their roots.

Mula has a fearsome reputation in some traditional writing. The line between Scorpio and Sagittarius, where the water signs end and the fire signs begin, is called gandanta, a knot. Twenty-Seven does not read it as a curse. A seam in the zodiac marks a turning point, nothing more.

The four padas of Mula

Each nakshatra splits into four quarters of 3°20′, called padas. Each pada falls in a navamsa sign (the ninth-part chart), which colors how the mansion’s theme comes out.

  • Pada 1 (0°00′–3°20′ Sagittarius, Aries navamsa): uprooting with force. Bold, direct, fast to act.
  • Pada 2 (3°20′–6°40′ Sagittarius, Taurus navamsa): roots that hold. Patient digging, practical depth.
  • Pada 3 (6°40′–10°00′ Sagittarius, Gemini navamsa): the root as a question. Study, argument, ideas taken apart.
  • Pada 4 (10°00′–13°20′ Sagittarius, Cancer navamsa): the root as family and feeling. Ancestry, belonging, what was passed down.

The Moon in Mula

Ketu, Mula’s ruler, is the south node of the Moon: in Vedic thought it stands for letting go, the past and what is already known deep down. Someone born with the Moon in Mula starts the Vimshottari periods in a Ketu period, 7 years in full.

The Moon passes through Mula about once every 27.3 days and stays about a day. At noon UTC it is in Mula on Oct 16, Nov 12, Dec 10 (2026), from our chart engine. To check your own birth Moon, use the nakshatra calculator.
